People You'd Like to KnowThis unique and highly personal collection of photographs by Herb wise transmits a feeling of camaraderie while letting us share Herb’s glances into the working lives of some of the most iconic musicians of the 60s, 70s and 80s. People You’d Like to Know offers an intimate look at the lives of legendary musicians during the 1970s including Bob Dylan, David Bowie, John Lee Hooker, Lou Reed, Ray Charles, Frank Zappa, Blondie, New York Dolls, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Chuck Berry, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Taj Mahal and Steve Winwood, among many others.

Photographer Herb Wise travelled extensively over three decades, attending dozens of music festivals, where he developed palpable camaraderie among musicians. During his time as Editor at Oak Publications, the legendary New York music publisher, Wise learned his craft from friend David Gahr, the revered photographer of American folk music performers. In order to aid his regular need for musicians’ photos Wise began travelling with Gahr, who showed him how to shoot and what to look for in a portrait.

As his technique improved, Wise became a prolific photographer of music festivals which, in the 1960s and 1970s they were often laid-back affairs with no backstage, offering many opportunities for him to take informal portraits and close up performance shots, catching genuinely spontaneous off-guard moments.
